MP4 is a "lossy" codec, meaning that there is some loss in IQ each time there is a recoding. If iMovie indeed cannot maintain full quality on import, is there Mac-compatible (or Unix-compatible) software to convert an MP4 into DV format? I figure if I can get my clip into DV, then iMovie could import it without any conversion. After all, the quality level was already limited to DVD MPEG2 levels, which is not much.Ģ. Why the loss of quality? Can't Apple Intermediate Codec maintain the same quality level as MP4. From reading around, I understand that iMovie converts what you import into the Apple Intermediate Codec. This loss was preserved after exporting to MP4 from iMovie and after creating a new DVD using iDVD.ġ. There was a clear loss of quality, mostly posterization (or pixellation?) of the shadow areas. Then I imported this MP4 into iMovie, choosing the highest-quality option available (Large). Handbrake was able to extract the DVD (I left the default settings, converting to MP4) and the quality was as good as the DVD. I used a Mac with OSX.7 (Lion), Handbrake, and iMovie 11. I wanted to take an old DVD, burned from a 1990s' PAL VHS tape into a PAL DVD (24 fps, I think), and create a new version with some editing (mainly, adding titles). I am new to this forum and I wonder whether anyone has encountered the following problem.
